Degree Spotlight: Counseling

Successful counselors need to be good listeners and strong communicators who are able to identify with individual patients, and apply their training to a wide range of situations.

There are three main types of counseling schools of study:

  • Psychology
  • Psychiatry
  • Psychotherapy/social work

And within each of these three types, there are numerous further subdivisions, giving you an almost endless array of choices while studying at your chosen counseling school. Many of the core counseling degree courses you take will be similar, including:

  • Human development
  • Statistics
  • Research methodology
  • Testing and measurement
  • Clinical psychology
  • Psychotherapy
  • Perspectives on human behavior

Because you proceed through coursework at your own pace, you can earn a counseling degree in as little as ten months, or within two years or more.
