Special Education

If you have a desire to teach and help children who have mental or physical disabilities, earning a degree that focuses specifically on special education may be the right career path for you. Within this degree program, you will learn the core skills needed to teach in general; however, you will also be given the knowledge and tools necessary to meet the needs of special needs students. Special education teachers are responsible for adapting the curriculum in order to reach these students, as they often need a modified program to fully grasp new academic concepts. Some of the conditions that special education teachers work with include language impairments, emotional issues, autism, hearing and visual disabilities and mental retardation. Many special education teachers choose to move beyond a 4-year bachelor degree to earn their master degree. This additional classroom training gives them even more tools to reach disabled students who are in need of special attention.
